Object Americana, 2020

3D Printed Physical Sculpture Gallery

I believe that sculpture should have some form of an experienceable physical presence. This might take form in a fully digital Virtual Reality, but I have developed the choreography of Object Americana specifically to result in a 3D-printable file object. Being also a digifacturing specialist, I created a series of 3D prints of the final objects with a slightly rough-hewn quality, emphasizing the physicality of the digital object. These are considered limited editions of one print each; if future printings are made, they will be of a separate edition.

Each sculpture that comprises Object Americana is the result of a genuine Machine--Human collaboration, representing some of the world's first AI-driven sculpture, as well as a novel example of this type of collaboration.

The Machine Intelligence at the heart of the project contributes a perceptive ability that I, the Human, cannot possess: the ability to perceive two objects as one and output a depiction of this imagination.

I, the Human, contribute my own ability to take the Machine-generated point-cloud and see where the surface of the implied object should be drawn. From a larger perspective, I also contribute the ability to design the choreography and work/data-flow that is the project itself. For more information on that aspect, see the "METHOD" section.

In this way, the partnership creates pieces of physical material that are both fundamentally of the Machine and fundamentally of the Human. This new genre is only the beginning of a new era of Machine--Human collaboration.
